Anime Characters With The INTP Personality Type

Some genres of art and storytelling seem almost tailormade for INTP characters: and in the world of anime, there are plenty of logicians. They’re the talented misfits, quirky heroes, complicated villains, and brilliant detectives.

L Lawliet from Death Note

This international consulting detective has amazing analytical skills and can get to the bottom of any mystery. L Lawliet is reclusive, suffers from low self-esteem, and can come off as rather blunt and cold at times—typical of the Logician. Professionally speaking he builds up a certain mystique around his abilities, but in person, he doesn’t really care how people see him. He has plenty of eccentricities; for instance, when it comes to his disheveled, barefoot appearance and his diet. He famously has a sweet tooth.

Tsuyu Asui “Froppy” from My Hero Academy

Straightforward, blunt and introverted is how this young heroine is often described. She’s great hero material: stoic, capable and cool in a crisis, unlike her classmates, who tend to be more reactive. She’s also a very quirky character, with superpowers based on frogs.

Shiro from No Game No Life

This anime heroine is very logical and brilliant at solving puzzles, but she struggles to understand human emotions and has difficulties with friendships. Along with her teenage brother Sora, she forms half of the gaming entity known as “Blank.”

Ginko from Mushishi: The “Wanderer”

Capable and adaptable, he travels from town to town trying to live a quiet life as he strives to protect humans from the supernatural creatures known as Mushi. Like many Logicians, Ginko doesn’t display many biases or prejudices; he’s level-headed about the Mushi, seeing them not as monsters but as beings trying to survive, like anyone else. While he appears easygoing on the surface, deep down he takes his responsibilities very seriously, typical of an INTP.

Ranpo Edogawa from Bungo Stray Dogs

The self-proclaimed best detective in the world, named after a real-life Japanese mystery novelist, Ranpo has brilliant deductive abilities, but he can also be a bit childish and lazy. One quirk of this character is he sometimes has trouble doing basic everyday tasks—part of his “eccentric genius” persona.

Kakashi Hataki from Naruto Kakashi

A calm, dispassionate teacher character, Kakashi is quiet, easygoing and knowledgeable, and is always there to help his students. He’s also a good judge of character and he’s no pushover; he doesn’t hesitate to act when he realizes someone is deceiving him. He often only shares fragments of his thoughts and some of what he says is quite ambiguous; this sense of hesitancy and uncertainty suggests that he’s a Prospecting personality type, rather than a Judge.

Pieck from Attack on Titan

Intelligent, easygoing and a great strategist, Pieck shows a lot of sympathy and compassion towards other characters. But she’s usually typed as a thinker rather than a feeler due to her ability to calculate risks and determine the right course of action. Her warmer-than-typical character signifies a more mature Logician.

Lain Iwakura from Serial Experiments Lain

This dark anime series is popular among people who like mind-bending philosophical questions, so it’s fitting that the main character is a Logician. Shy, introverted and very logical, Lain is a bit of an outcast and she’s usually typed as INTP. She sometimes sees things that don’t seem to be real, which might be a symptom of a heightened imagination.

Gowther from Seven Deadly Sins

Originally created as a doll, this character has a deadpan expression and is dispassionate and logical. He doesn’t understand emotions well and he often offends other people unintentionally. But he’s a brilliant problem solver. He’s also very speculative; he can see different potential courses of action and all the potential outcomes they entail, typical of the Logician.

Light Yagami from Death Note

This polarizing villain from Death Note is not the most endearing or sympathetic person, but he has quite a few INTP traits. He’s able to think strategically and analytically, and he’s very logical and dispassionate.

Kisuke Urahara from Bleach

First introduced as an easygoing candy shop owner, this character has hidden depths. He’s intelligent, analytical, and innovative. He’s a bit more outgoing than most INTPs, but otherwise he’s almost the perfect fit for this personality. He even has a slightly sarcastic sense of humor and he can get a bit over-the-top about subjects he’s interested in.

Shikamaru Nara from Naruto

This “lazy ninja” character has a cult following. He spends time napping rather than fighting, but he has hidden depths. He’s smart, analytical and very strategic. Also, he’s often hard to read. He’s one of the only characters who understands the rules of the complicated tabletop strategy game shogi, suggesting he might well be a Logician.

Saiki Kusuo from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

A high school student with supernatural abilities, who’s trying to hide in plain sight, Saiki’s intelligent, laid-back and reserved, like a lot of Logicians. But he’s a bit more manipulative than the average INTP. He’s learned to mute his own emotions, to retain control of his powers. Like many Logicians, Saiki is quite distinctive looking - with green glasses and pink hair and antennae.

Van Hohenheim from Fullmetal Alchemist

A master of his craft, Vanhoenheim puts an anime twist on the “mad scientist” trope. He’s usually calm, collected and wise, though he has moments of eccentricity. Unlike some of the other characters, he values knowledge without being ambitious in a worldly sense. He also has surprising hidden depths, revealed in his backstory.

Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass

A brilliant strategist who can see the bigger picture, Lelouch is stoic and quite charismatic. And like most Logicians, he usually has a keen sense of perspective and objectivity, but sometimes his outsized ego trips him up.
