INTP-A and INTP-T: What's the Difference?

People with the INTP personality type have Introverted (I), Intuitive (N), Thinking (T), and Perceiving (P) personality traits and have the nickname of the “Logician”. They’re also divided into two sub-groups of INTP-A and INTP-T.

People with the INTP-A personality type are referred to as Assertive Logicians, and people with the INTP-T personality type are referred to as Turbulent Logicians.

Since they both have the same primary personality type, they have a lot in common, but some key differences can be identified. In this post, we discuss the two key differences that relate to how INTPs deal with change and how they get on with other people.

How INTPs deal with change

INTPs are prone to change directions and methods often when trying to solve a problem. This can lead them to make rash decisions and result in them wasting a lot of time when trying to come up with a solution. While both types of INTPs do this, the INTP-Ts are less likely to do so and give greater thought to the consequences of their decisions.

When INTP-Ts come across new information, they’re likely to be persuaded to look for new ways of solving problems, much more so than their INTP-A counterparts. They’re also slightly less confident in their abilities, which explains why they’re more cautious when changing directions and find it harder to make decisions.

How INTPs interact with others

INTP-As are known to not care much about how other people perceive them and don’t let other people upset them. INTP-Ts, however, do care to a certain extent. INTP-As don’t usually hold a grudge after an argument, which is largely the result of them not giving much thought to the opinions of other people.

They also don’t seek the advice of other people before making decisions, as they believe their superior intellect allows them to come up with the best solutions without the need for external input. When this approach works out for them, they’re very successful in life, but when it doesn’t, they can end up making bad decisions that stop them from progressing and achieving what they want to.

Another problem with the INTP personality trait is that they’re perceived as arrogant and condescending, which can lead to problems for them when trying to build relationships with other people—especially in a work environment.

INTP-Ts are much more likely to seek the input of other people when making decisions than their INTP-A counterparts. They also care more about how other people perceive them, which even extends to caring about their physical appearance.

Compared to Assertive Logicians, Turbulent Logicians are much more likely to be negatively affected when arguments arise between themselves and their peers. This means they care a lot more about gaining the approval of other people, which can also influence them when making decisions.

Key differences between INTP-A and INTP-T

• INTP-As are likely to have more consistency in their lives than INTP-Ts due to their confidence in the decisions they make and their lack of interest in getting external advice from other people before making decisions. INTP-Ts, however, care more about what other people think and seek out external advice before making decisions.
• INTP-Ts are more likely to change their goals than INTP-As, which can make them more flexible problem solvers. But this can also have negative outcomes in some situations.
• INTP-Ts are much more likely to be affected by the opinions of other people than INTP-As. INTP-As, however, don’t put much thought into the opinions of other people, which is largely driven by their belief in their superior intellect. This means INTP-As can make decisions quickly, but it doesn’t always mean the best decisions are made.
• INTP-As can be prone to living much more isolated lives than their INTP-T cousins. This is made worse by their lack of caring about the opinions of other people, which can make them seem arrogant to other people.
• When INTP-As have a good idea, they run with it and try to implement it right away. INTP-Ts, however, seek out other people’s opinions, which can lead them to abandon a good idea if other people don’t approve of it.
• INTP-Ts give greater thought to the consequences of their decisions than their INTP-A cousins.
• When INTP-Ts come across new information, they’re likely to be persuaded to look for new ways of solving problems, much more so than their INTP-A counterparts.
